Youth hockey is actually a rather safe sport.   Hockey tends to be a very well-supervised sport because it is complex to learn. Over the last 20 years, body checking has been eliminated below the Bantam level (ages 14-15). Safe Kids Worldwide showed youth hockey players visited the ER less often than kids who play football, soccer, basketball, or who wrestle.

Hockey Equipment

Basic Equipment

KYHA wants to help keep your cost down.  A future goal would be to have equipment rentals. You can also look at Play It Again Sports for reasonably priced items or Facebook Marketplace.  Your gear does not need to be new or top of the line to play hockey.

Selecting hockey equipment is a key issue for players, parents, and coaches. When purchasing and fitting hockey equipment, remember two important factors:

  1. make certain the player is adequately protected and
  2. be sure the fitting allows freedom of movement so the player can properly perform the necessary skills.
  3. Pure Hockey Sizing Chart

By carefully considering these two factors, your child will be more comfortable and will have more fun playing hockey.

A complete set of hockey equipment can be purchased for a relatively reasonable cost. Shop around for the best values and remember that you need not buy the most expensive equipment. Inquire about local equipment swaps and team discounts, but keep in mind the equipment must fit properly to provide maximum protection.

How to Gear up

How to dress your Hockey player

Here are some tips on how to safely outfit your child in their hockey gear.

Accessories

Skate Accessories

You will need some sort of covering for the skates to protect the blades.  Changing your player's shoelaces will help you see them when they are on the ice.

Taping Your Hockey Socks

Lots of options on how to tape your child's hockey socks so their shin guards stay in place.

How to Size and Tape a Stick

The length of your child's should generally extend from the ice to the player's chin (with skates on). Quality and price differ greatly, so the choice is yours.

Water bottle

Label Everything

Find a water bottle your child can squirt in their mouth while wearing a helmet.

Label Everything

Label Everything

With so much equipment, it is important to label it, with an initial or name. Pro tip: Write your child's name on a square of brightly colored tape so they can be easily spotted by you while they are on the ice.  Brightly colored laces will also help too.
